JAMES BRIAN FICHT

12/18/54-6/6/17

James Brian Ficht, aka Jim, Jimmy or Dad, was born on Dec. 18, 1954 in Jamaica, Queens NY, the third child of Tom and Marie (Horan) Ficht. He joined his older siblings Dolores Ann and Tommy in their extended household that included his grandparents and uncle in their two-family home on 88th Avenue.  Jim was a graduate of Immaculate Conception School (“The Monastery”) and Holy Cross High School in Queens, followed by Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Business from St. John’s University.

Jim worked in the insurance industry for his entire professional career and enjoyed great success and the friendship of colleagues near and far who became life-long friends. Over the years he accomplished great things at Orien Risk Analysts while simultaneously helping to manage the many baseball, softball, basketball, soccer and other miscellaneous activities in which his three children participated, but still managing to run 3-4 miles every day.  His passion for the New York Yankees, college basketball and the NY Giants is legend, a legacy that has been embraced by his children.  He has been described by many as “the nicest guy I’ve ever known”, a statement echoed by anyone who knew him.

When Jim and his wife Joan moved to Floral Park in 1983, it didn’t take long for Jim to pursue a life-long dream to be a firefighter.  He joined the Floral Park Centre Fire Co. in September 1985 and was an active member for 31 years, unanimously elected Treasurer for 30 of those years, while still managing to outrun many other members to the fire house on calls.

Thanks to some lovely summer vacations in the Upstate New York, Jim, Joan and kids fell in love with the mountains and were able to successfully build a log cabin in one of the few non-cell phone covered areas of the world in order to enjoy the unspoiled peace and beauty of nature.  From there Jim was able to kayak the lakes and rivers and climb the mountains of the Adirondacks no matter the temperature, snow depth or threat of moose attack.

Dad inspired three incredibly talented kids to pursue their goals without hesitation, unflinchingly attending a wide variety of art shows, soccer games, plays, concerts, track meets, and Model UN award ceremonies while still managing to read up on every major battle of World War II.  Dad also taught his children the importance of honesty, kindness, patience, forbearance, and love through his actions every day.  Imbued with a fierce iron will and a drive to succeed he would persevere no matter the challenge, never backing down in the face of adversity.  He was never someone who sought attention or accolades and was happy knowing he had a wife who adored him and whom he loved equally, a loving and supportive family, a good job, and great friends.

One can only hope he’s relaxing in the mountains now, listening to Bing Crosby music,  reading up on Montgomery or Pershing, waiting for his bratwurst to cook on the grill and grumbling about the Yankee closer’s poor performance against the White sox the previous night.

There is a hole in all of our hearts without him, and to say he’ll be missed is an understatement.  Rest in Peace Jimmy.  We love you forever.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Floral Park Fire Department of the Salvation Army.
