Dorothy Ann O'Connell

O’Connell, Dorothy (nee O’Neill) of Franklin Square, NY and Deltona, FL, Saturday, February 20, 2021. Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away in the Lord at the age of 99 in Franklin Square.  She was born in Manhattan in 1921 and was raised in Brooklyn, NY. She also lived in Cambria Heights and Port Washington, NY before moving to Florida.  After graduating from St. Joseph’s H.S. in Brooklyn, NY, she worked for the NY Telephone Company where she made lifelong friends. In 1944, she married the late Thomas O’Connell, a Deputy Chief in NYFD. They were married for 62 years and lived most of those years next door to his twin brother and his wife, Hazel , her best friend, both in NY and FL. She was the proud mother of 6 girls who all graduated from college: Priscilla O’Connell Key (Walter), Patricia Murphy (James), Eileen Cole (Robert), Joan  O’Connell, Dorrie Forrest, and Margaret Curci (John). She was also the beloved grandmother of 28 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren, and numerous dear nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers Joseph and Edward O’Neill and her dear sister, Evelyn Jordan. She was an active member of the Rosary Altar Society in NY, Catholic Daughters in FL, the Empire State Club. She was an avid bowler, and also enjoyed golf and playing bridge.  In lieu of flowers, donations could be made in her name for the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (mymasaa.org.) or the American Cancer Society (cancer.org)

Viewing will be Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 at Dalton’s Funeral Home, 29 Atlantic Avenue, Floral Park, NY 11001. Mass at 10:30 at Our Lady of Victory RC Church, Floral Park. Internment at St. Charles Cemetery.
