Minna Schanter, 87, of New Hyde Park, NY passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation in New Hyde Park after a brief stay.
She was born on November 10, 1931 in Otterndorf, Germany, the daughter of Wilhelm and Augusta Meyer and immigrated to America in the early 1950s.
Minna married William Schanter on December 17, 1955 at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Ridgewood, NY and they were together for 44 years. William passed away on April 27, 2000 after a courageous battle with cancer. Minna was at his side every step of the way.
Minna enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening but what brought her the most joy was sharing with anyone and everyone just how very proud she was of her son and grandson. She continued to share with the staff at Parker Jewish until her very last day on earth.
She is survived by her beloved son, James and her cherished grandson, Scott, both of New Hyde Park. She is also survived by a brother, Willy Meyer of Falcon, Mo.; nieces, Cathy (James) Quigley of Myrtle Beach, SC; Lynda Medley and Wendy (Don) McCarty of Texas; Gertrude (Peter) Wiggins of Cummings, GA, Veronika (Stanley) Moore of Gardiner, NY and Rosemarie Schanter of Wallkill, NY; nephews Peter (Danette) Giesse of Westernville, NY, William Giesse of Davenport, NY and John Schanter of the Bronx, NY. Her dear sister Erika Giesse passed away on July 15, 2012.
You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she’s gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 22, 2019 at 9:15 am at Notre Dame Church in New Hyde Park.
Burial will follow in the Locust Valley Cemetery in Locust Valley, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Alzheimer’s Association or the Dementia Society of America.
