CUFF - Thomas J. Jr., of Levittown, originally from Garden City, NY, passed quietly at home on April 22, 2018 with his beloved wife, Jane, at his side. Loving father of Sharon (Mary), Susan Fazio, Crissie (Rob) Sarni, and Kate (John) De Vito. Cherished grandfather of Nick, Jenna, Julia, Rise’, Janie, Jake, Matt, Danny, Jack, and Ava. Son of NYS Supreme Court Justice Thomas and Loretta nee McNamara. Brother of Eileen Murphy, Elizabeth Dalzell, Mary Dittrich, William, Jane Reynolds, Dorothy Grannemann, and Ann Henry.
Tom served the mission of volunteer fire service in many capacities beginning with the Garden City Fire Department in 1953, the Levittown Fire Department in 1961, then as President of the the following organizations: Nassau County Firemen’s Association, The South Shore Fire Departments Association, The Nassau County Fire Districts Association, the Southern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and the Fire Association of the State of New York.
For over three decades, he helped families of deceased firefighters successfully navigate the daunting federal procedures to ensure that they received the death benefit following the loss of their firefighter.
Over his career, Tom worked tirelessly to ensure that smoke detectors became requirements in all homes. He led a national codes and standards group that sought to improve emergency exit routes in hotels. He believed passionately in the importance of community-based influence over local volunteer fire services. We celebrate his life’s dedication to ensuring the safety of the public and the firefighters who faithfully respond to the call of duty.
Tom will be mourned by his family, friends, and fellow firefighters and can be visited at Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home in Levittown on Thursday and Friday, April 26 and 27 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Levittown Fire Department visitation at 8 p.m. on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Volunteer Fireman’s Home of the State of New York.
