Ignatius Alexander Goodridge longtime resident of Queens Village passed away on Monday April 15,2024-he was 88.

Ignatius was born on September 9,1935 at Estate Grove Place in Frederiksted,St Croix Virgin Islands.He was the 4th of 5 children born to James Masiah Goodridge and Ruth Goodridge.

Ignatius enlisted in the military in March 1954.He completed his service in February 1956 receiving medals for good conduct and National Defense Service.

Ignatius began working with the United States Postal Service in 1958, and made his way up the ranks to become the first African American manager in the United States Postal Service.He retired in November 1990, achieving many awards and citations during his tenure.

Following a few years of his retirement from the post office, he resumed a career with the Metropolitan Transit Authority, again making his way up the ranks to achieving the position of Level 2 Supervisor.

Ignatius met his wife Leonarda Theresa when he was in the 10th grade .Theresa was attending Christiansted High School, and was in the 7th grade.They married on December 31,1957 and together they raised 4 children;Ray ,Mitchell,Sharon and Carron, in Brooklyn New York .They eventually settled in Queens New York in 1979

Ignatius took great pride in the educational and career achievements of his family near and far.He loved telling stories about his past and instructing the young in their future.

He enjoyed listening to classical choral music as well as traditional quadrille music .He loved to eat Johnny cake, sweet tarts and hot red pea soup. He had a passion for new automobiles

Ignatius was preceded in death by his brothers and sister -Ivan,George and Leona, as well as his first son Douglas.


Ignatius is survived by his sister Inez, his wife Theresa and their children-Mitchell Alphonso, Ray Anthony,Sharon Ann, and Carron Ann, grandchildren-Walter Alexander, Tyla Nicole,Taylor,Michael and Yvette and great grandchildren-Nasir and Autumn.He is also survived by various nieces, great nieces ,nephews and cousins.
