Carney, Joseph 84, of Hicksville, NY passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2024. Joey was born in the Bronx and grew up on Eagle Ave/161st St. and attended St. Peter and Paul Grammar School and DeWitt Clinton High School. He patriotically served his country in the US Army and did a tour in Vietnam in 1962. He returned home and married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart Maggie Collins in 1963. They started their family together in the Bronx and moved to Hicksville in 1968 to raise their family of seven children.
Joey worked as a truck driver for the Jack Frost Sugar Company before becoming a New York City Transit Cop for 17 years and served as an elected official of the Transit Police Benevolent Association. It was in that capacity that Joey really enjoyed helping his fellow officers. Joey played on all the PBA sports teams and was inducted into the Transit Police Officer’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
Joey is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Maggie; his children, Aileen Milan and her husband Roberto, Joe Carney and his wife Susie, Jeanne Golembiewski and her husband Craig, Christine Carney, Megan Carney, Steven Carney, Erin Winters and her husband Mike; his cherished grandchildren Joseph, Mairead, Kate, Siobhan, Kiera, Grace, Maggie, Roberto, Eamon, Claire, Sean, Nelle, and John; his beloved sister Denise; he was predeceased by his sisters Patsy, Jeanne, and Nancy and his brothers Billy and Tommy. Visitation will be at Dalton Funeral Home, Hicksville NY, on Friday, January 26th from 3 PM to 8 PM. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Holy Family R. C. Church, Hicksville, on Saturday at 9:45 AM. Burial will follow at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood, Westbury.
